Cardiovascular System: Its Working and importance

There are different systems working in the human body. The overall fitness and health of humans depend upon the proper functioning of these systems in the body. In this article, I am going to discuss cardiovascular system, its working and importance.

The cardiovascular system is one of the most important systems that are working in the human body. The other name for the cardiovascular system is the circulatory system. The heart and the blood vessels are the main components of this circulatory or cardiovascular system.

If we define this system in simple words it would be as: Circulatory or cardiovascular system that pumps and circulates the blood throughout the human body. Mainly, the cardiovascular system delivers oxygen and essential nutrients to the cells in the human body. Also, this system takes off carbon dioxide (CO2) and other waste materials from the human body.

So, by understanding the definition and working of the cardiovascular system we can understand the importance of cardiovascular fitness and health.

Cardiovascular Fitness & Health

As the introduction describes that cardiovascular system is one of the most important systems functioning in the human body. But unfortunately, studies reveal that most individuals overlook or ignore its importance. Statistics show that this ignorance is the biggest or leading cause of complications in the cardiovascular system. Also, cardiovascular complications are one of the highest reasons for deaths in human beings.

So, we can say that if you can improve your cardiovascular fitness then definitely you will enjoy a better, healthier, longer, and quality life. The biggest question is how can we improve the health and fitness of our cardiovascular system. The simplest answer to this question is by showing determination and regularity.


If you are regular in exercising your body, you will surely attain a healthier and fitter cardiovascular system that will surely improve the quality and length of your life. Regular exercise will result in an improved level of well-being, endurance, and mental well-being. Also, you will enjoy a better immune system which will help you in fighting against a number of diseases more effectively.

Working of the Cardiovascular system

The cardiovascular or circulatory system mainly comprises three main components. These components are the heart, blood, and blood vessels.

Human beings have a closed cardiovascular or circulatory system.

In the closed cardiovascular system blood always circulates in the blood vessels and arteries and the heart continuously recycles the blood and blood never leaves the blood vessels and arteries. The cardiovascular system has three main forms of blood circulation. These circulations are as follows:

Pulmonary circulation

In pulmonary circulation, the lungs signify the path that blood has to take through the lungs. Here oxygen infuses blood cells.

Coronary Circulation

 It is about the movement of blood through the tissues of the heart.

Systematic Circulation

Systematic circulation is about the rest of the body. It signifies the path to the blood for the provision of oxygen and necessary nutrients to the cells of the remaining entire body. Here, blood also passes through the digestive system where it collects essential nutrients and minerals.

Functioning of Blood Vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries)

The blood vessels that comprise arteries, veins, and capillaries, ensure the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients to the tissues. The aorta which is the main artery of the heart takes the oxygenated blood to the blood vessels. The left ventricle of the heart pumps the blood into the aorta. Then the blood goes into many smaller arteries and then finally distributed throughout the body.

The smooth and silky inside layer of an artery ensures the quick flow of blood. Whereas the strong outside layer of the artery ensures the forceful flow of the blood.  When the oxygenated blood enters the capillaries it releases oxygen and essential nutrients. Here the blood collects the waste products and then flows into the veins and these veins take this waste-rich blood back to the heart. In the heart, pulmonary circulation allows the exchange of gases in the lungs.

Responsibilities of Systematic circulation

The systematic circulation is responsible for taking the blood through the kidneys. The passing of the blood through the kidneys is also known as renal circulation. Here, the kidneys take off the maximum waste of the blood.

Systematic circulation is also responsible for passing the blood through the small intestine. The passing of the blood through the small intestine is also termed portal circulation.

In portal circulation, blood collects in the portal vein from the small intestine and passes through the liver. Here, the liver sucks the sugars from the blood and stores them.

Other important functions of cardiovascular system

Where the cardiovascular system provides our body cells the oxygen and other essential nutrients, there, it also ensures the production of homeostasis. The presence of white blood cells also enables the cardiovascular system in fighting infections and diseases.

After understanding the complete primary function of the cardiovascular system, one can easily understand why the good health and fitness of the cardiovascular system are so much important for the overall fitness of human beings. 

Therefore, if you want to live a healthier, fitter, longer and happier life then you must take care of your cardiovascular or circulatory system. A strong cardiovascular system always leads to a strong and healthy life. A strong and healthy cardiovascular system can only be maintained through determination and regularity in exercise.


At the start of the article, I have tried to enlighten the importance of exercise for a stronger cardiovascular system, and also at the end of the article again I am emphasizing the importance of exercise for a stronger cardiovascular system.
